Flounder is accountable for more than half the farmed fish production in Korea, along with the highest export volume. Korean fisheries professionals have been farming the fish for about thirty years.
Among such flounders, those farmed in Jeju boasts high output and great safety management, and was selected as a Global Quality Product by the Korean government in 2005.
As the history of flounder farming continued, many aspects of the industry improved, including the growth rate of the fish, but many problems were also found. One of such issues is the increasing rate of perishing fish caused by substandard farming environment and influx of diseases. According to a report by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and Jeju Fish Farming Cooperative published in March 2018, the damage from perished farmed flounders was 51.9 billion Korean won in 2013, increasing to 56.3 billion won in 2014, 59.5 billion won in 2015 (6,769 tons), 79.5 billion won in 2016 (8,853 tons), and 77.6 billion won in 2017 (8,648 tons). In the two most recent years, the damage amounts to 80 billion won just in Jeju.
이In response to this vicious trend, Haeyeon introduced genetically selected breeds
several years ago to enhance the disease resistance and growth rate of the flounders.
In addition, brooding and spawning fish tank are separately operated to
enable the production of fertilized flounder egg throughout the year.
